Protection of digital and confidential information is crucial in today's technologically sophisticated environment. Most devices nowadays are linked with a network, either directly or indirectly. These inter-connected devices are potentially vulnerable to any kind of intrusion as most of the hackers and intruders are more technically sound and possess a stronger knowledge in comparison to a normal user.
The threat and its after effect, becomes severe if the loss of information brings financial losses to a user. Sensitive information like credit card information, bank account password etc. need to be protected with more secure methods in order to use them for e-payment options.
NFC is supposed to act as an upgraded method of making payments electronically allowing a more secure mode of payment as compared to e-payment systems. As NFC is based on smart phone devices having hardware and software interaction at user's end, it is more convenient and easy for conducting transactions.
Organizations have realized the importance of security and ease of mobile payments for the users and so have started deploying NFC in their business practices. It helps businesses to setup a brand reputation and recognition for the company by including these features. Not only the financial transactions but other services like file transfer can also be performed with NFC. Information sharing including confidential ones in a secure manner is the key feature of this communication technology.
NFC provides a shorter set-up time as compared to other short range communication technologies like Bluetooth. Average set-up time of pairing between two NFC enabled devices is about 1/10 seconds which is extremely fast and being a short range transmission technology, security is an additional advantage.
Another additional feature of NFC is that if one of the pairing devices is out of battery or is not a battery powered device, another device can transmit the information. An example of such a case could be a battery drained smart phone i.e. turned off or a contactless smart credit card.
- A number of NFC enabled smart phone applications have been introduced recently to assist users in making mobile payments securely. Even various business giants are including them in their business practices for facilitating their customers. Samsung, along with Visa has announced that future releases of Galaxy phones will be integrated with NFC payment systems.
- A famous entertainment company in India, PVR Cinemas has announced to launch its NFC enabled "wallet" app for BlackBerry 10 device users. It would assist them to make payment while purchasing their tickets from the ticket counter, with their BlackBerry device.
