Laptops these days are ubiquitous. For many of us, they define a computer because we don't need a large personal computer and wouldn't imagine having one that we can't pick up carry away or simply put on our lap. While there is no denying the uses and convenience of a laptop there are some problems associated both with using them and taking care of them. Laptops don't have a fixed position so it can't easily be estimated how hot they will get. Laptops, like all computers, need fans to keep them cool due to significant heat produced by the CPU, battery, and other electronics. If those electronics overheat it can cause a number of problems.
Laptops are often put in strange positions. Their very namesake, the "lap", is a common location for using one, but there are problems associated with keeping it there. First, our clothes commonly obstruct the airflow out of the computer's fan. In addition to that, our clothes and body hold the heat produced by a laptop and give off the heat from our own bodies. Though, many places we might like to use a laptop can have similar effects. Pillows, chairs, carpets, can increase the temperature of the computer. Sunlight and ambient temperature can also make it hard or impossible for your computer to stay cool and safe. A laptop cooler will cool the computer to guard against the overheating that can cause your computer to unexpectedly shutdown and lose your work. If it overheats, you can ruin critical parts of your laptop or melt your hard drive causing you to lose everything stored on it. High temperatures can also simply hurt the performance of the computer if they are not allowed to reach catastrophic levels.
An additional reason to be careful about using a computer on your lap is that many people are increasingly worried that radiations created by the computer could cause cancer or affect our reproductive fertility. This makes the lap a very dangerous place to use the laptop. This doesn't change the fact the lap is a very comfortable and convenient place to use a computer. Buying a flat laptop cooler can help. A laptop cooler will separate the computer from your skin and provide a barrier that will decrease your exposure to radiation. It will also raise the laptop off of your body enough in order to provide a more ergonomic position for typing.
