Bill Gates was the founder of the multibillion dollar company known as Microsoft. Microsoft was founded in 1975 and has become the most widely recognized company for computer software and operating systems. In fact, the company's operating system can be found worldwide. It is also one of the United States' top earning companies. The first MS-DOS PC operating system was introduced as early as the 1980s and the rest is history!
Microsoft was at the forefront of the internet and launched Internet Explorer and MSN in the late 1990s. MSN started as an online service provider for common services like news and e-mail, and quickly branched out to include the widely popular MSNBC news station. By the end of the 90s Microsoft had a hand in seemingly every technological advance on the market. They were a powerhouse of innovation, technological sophistication and business prowess.
Nowadays the Microsoft programs most commonly associated with the company are the office applications. Microsoft Office has a wide range of programs to meet the computing needs of almost everyone. These programs include: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft One Note, Microsoft PowerPoint and much more. However, Microsoft created the Windows operating systems which have featured the not-so-popular Windows Vista, the use-friendly Windows 7 and the revolutionary Windows 8 in recent years.
Not only has Microsoft dominated in the market of computer operating systems and office software, it has also delved in to the market of social media and video games. In 2011 Microsoft acquired the very popular social network known as Skype, where people can create profiles and chat in real-time face-to-face via webcams. Since the launch of Skype the program has undergone many changes, and underwent its most recent facelift after the acquisition by Microsoft.
Any twelve year old boy can tell you that Xbox is the leader in video gaming, but they might be surprised to learn that the company is indeed owned by Microsoft. The computer moguls branched out to the video game industry in the early 2000s and have launched three versions of the tremendously popular Xbox since. Xbox has thousands of games that are all developed and produced by Microsoft, as well as thousands of online applications and internet services that can be purchased. The online gaming network known as Xbox Live has been around since the creation of the Xbox, but has been gaining in popularity over the last decade with the introduction of multi-player games like Halo and Call of Duty.
In the last year Microsoft has been working to penetrate the market of consumer friendly and intuitive technology. The introduction of Window 8 and the Windows phone show that they are serious and aren't going anywhere in the near future. The company took a huge risk by redefining the operating system that brought them trillions of dollars over the last thirty years, but the risk seems to have paid off and Microsoft has once again established itself as a forerunner in the new technology era.
