Everywhere you look, or go, in these modern times, there is always technology there with you. It is true to say that technology has made people's lives so much easier. Many people are happy to use this technology, but few understand the processes behind it. At the core of most of the technology is the field of electronics. For electronics to work someone, somewhere, has been responsible for the manufacturing of PCB boards.
Electronics can appear very confusing to the average person. So much so that often people feel that the reason why something works is not an important factor providing that they can make the item do what they need it to do. Happily there are individuals who do know these things.
There are so many things, which an individual uses on a daily basis, that rely on electronic components. These components need to be laid out in a set manner for the item to operate as required. Were you to open one of these devices you would see how this gets achieved.
These electronic items are all placed on something called a printed circuit board. More often than not they will be either a pale brown colour or green. On one side you will see shiny metal tracks. These tracks are used to allow electrical power to only go where it is meant to.
There are basically two types of Printed Circuit Board. Depending on the density of components and the tasks they are asked to perform will dictate which type will be used. These two types are known as surface mount or through board.
Whichever type is being produced there are a couple of things that the operative requires, good eyesight and a steady hand. Without either one, creating one of these printed circuit boards gets much more difficult. The other elements, such as identifying the components and how they should be fitted can be taught.
The most common type of board that people will see is the through board. This means that the component bodies are on the opposite side of the board to the shiny metal tracks. Their legs are passed through holes in the board and are then securely soldered into position. The legs have to be cropped off at a certain length to prevent any possible fouling on other boards or the outer casing. The good news with this type of printed circuit board is that the components are of a size that are relatively easy to handle.
The components on the other type of board are securely soldered to the tracks. In themselves the components are much smaller, and so need greater care when being handled. To assemble this type of board high magnification is required as well as good lighting. This will help to eliminate the possibility of badly soldered joints.
Once all of these components are secured in their correct positions the board is then given a conformal coating. This will prevent any stray dust bridging across any of the component legs, or the tracks. Hopefully you will now have more of an understanding about some of the things which need to happen during the manufacturing of PCB boards.
