All photo scanners have a lot of automatic tools that are built in to analyze the image you are scanning and to make adjustments to result with the best scan possible.

However, you have to know and realize that you must not all the time rely on the capability of the built in buttons or options. You must decide which is best for a quality outcome. You must preview the result before performing any action. Make your own setting if you do not want the outcome upon previewing.

The automatic options cannot always save your day as the device does have limitations when it comes to adjusting all the settings immediately. Some photos are just beyond the capabilities of these tools. To get the best quality however you need to judge it based on your eyes and mind. If you think it is better then be it.

Upon checking that the image is not presented the way you want it like it may be too light or too dark, use the exposure option to manually adjust the setting. If everything seems not fine after doing it then try to set the midtones. This option will darken or lighten the object to achieve the desired texture.

If the image however is too light for you then use the bright control option. If your image is too bright then after adjusting, it will become pure white. The details around the area may washed out. The same thing will happen with too dark photos, you only have to use the bright control to adjust everything and set it according to how you want it to be.

The brighter or lighter pixels will not be touched when dealing with the midtones option. Only those that are far beyond its capability. This option will help you make the element darker or lighter without touching the set highlights. You can however do more adjustments to deal with the sharpening and saturation of the element.

Adjust only if it is necessary, do not do certain adjustments however if you do not need it. Know the concept behind the saturation control as well. Saturation lets you control how vivid the color might be. Do not make your photo over saturated by increasing its value as it might appear to be out of focus.
